The Mediation Society was established in 1998, and incorporated in February 1999.  The original goal was to limit the membership to 100 experienced mediators, who wanted to share experiences and who wanted to improve their practice of mediation. The first slate of officers were Robert M. Smith, Board Chair; R. Stephen Goldstein, President; Michael P. Carbone, Vice President; Paul J. Dubow, Secretary; Richard J. Stratton, Treasurer. The position of Board Chair was eliminated in 2003, and the Board now has an average of 18 voting Directors.
